It could be said that the Montauk Library is on the edge of the world, given its location at the eastern end of Long Island. The library itself is a beautiful building with vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a newer library that began with an idea in 1980. It opened in a small building on the property of Montauk Community Church. In 1982, the residents of Montauk voted to purchase 2.5 acres for the site of a new library building. The ribbon cutting for the new building was in 1990 and is where the library is currently located. The library includes an archives of local history where they have gathered oral histories of Montauk which are accessible in their New York Heritage Collections and their own archives page.
