I think what makes the Lindenhurst Memorial Library special is how our community embraces the history, and the newness, of the building as it combined into a space filled with nooks and seating for people to have the choice to connect, or disconnect, with other people, with their ideas, and of course- with a great story.
Lisa Kropp, Library Director
This is the first library I visited in this project. I am both a librarian and a photographer and started this project to celebrate libraries and the people who make them great. In this first post, I chose to work with my colleague, Lisa Kropp, the library director. She has been a supportive colleague and a leader in the profession. This year (2025), she was recognized as a Mover & Shaker in Library Journal.
The Lindenhurst Memorial Library was opened in 1953 as a village library. It started with the idea to memorialize the 653 veterans of World War II from Lindenhurst. The village created a memorial on May 10, 1945. The idea for the library came to fruition when voters approved the creation of a library on October 19, 1951. The library is certified sustainable by the Sustainability Libraries Initiative and provides many unique services to the community.
