Lakeview Public Library
Beyond the incredible history of our building and the founding of the library, what truly sets us apart is the dedication and care my staff brings to serving the public. Their unwavering commitment to creating a welcoming and educational environment is at the heart of what makes our library such a valuable resource for the community .

Camina Raphael-Lubin, Library Director

I had a great visit at the Lakeview Public Library. The staff was interested in my project and had a lot of fun getting their photos taken. Two employees are photographers and one helped me pose Camina Raphael-Lubin, the director. Camina was able to share with me the history of the community and showed me a photograph of a house in which the library originated. I learned about the struggles it has faced and the importance of the institution to the community.

The library originated in 1962 as an idea from a group of residents in Lakeview. They formed a committee and worked with School District 12 to pass legislation establishing the Lakeview Public Library District. In 1968, the library opened in a temporary location at the Lakeview Elementary School. The Black Affairs Council of the Unitarian Universalist Church granted the Friends Association a small amount of money, which allowed the library to establish a charter and move to its present location in the Woodfield Road Elementary School. The library purchased the building in 1988 from the school system.
